Avalon’s festive Danube is $4,751, or free air, not both
The 24% saving and the airfare waiver are the same money offered twice, and the arithmetic only resolves once you have priced a flight.

- The $4,751 fare was found in a November 2027 departure and the air-or-cash choice depends on a flight price you do not have yet — the saving is real but not additive.
From the operator’s listing for offer 27883, checked Oct 23. A from-price, not a quote — the operator’s page carries the live one.
The numbers, as listed
Seven nights on the Danube through Germany, Austria and Hungary, from $4,751 against an operator comparison of $6,251. That is $1,500, or 24 per cent, and $679 a night. Book by November 7th. The fare was found in a November 2027 departure, which for a festive cruise is the only month that matters: the markets are the itinerary.
The listing also carries an alternative — free air instead of the $1,500 — and the headline presents both as though they were separate benefits.
What the saving is, and isn’t
$1,500 off is exactly what it says if you are buying your own flights. If you take the air waiver instead, the $1,500 stops being a discount and becomes the value of a ticket the operator buys on your behalf, at a price neither you nor we can see. And the 24 per cent is measured against the operator’s comparison rate, not against a fare we found elsewhere. Treat it as the operator’s accounting, honestly presented but still theirs.
The number that survives all of that is $679 a night. That is the highest per-night figure of any river cruise on this board: above Scenic’s nine-night Danube at $574, above Avalon’s own tulip sailing at $618. Festive departures always carry a premium. This is what the premium looks like in dollars.
One benefit, described two ways, is not a better offer. It is a better headline.
What’s not in the number
Port charges, gratuities, drinks beyond what is poured at dinner, and transfers are not listed. Neither is a shore programme: the feed names holiday activities, and “activities” can mean a guided walk or a choir in a church, with very different values.
Nor does the listing name a cabin. At $679 a night on a festive week, a river cabin is plausibly the lowest category with a fixed window; the suites with a French balcony will price well above the headline. The gap between those two cabins is larger than most of the discounts on this page.
The break-even
One question decides this offer: what does a return flight to the Danube cost you? Above $1,500, take the air. Below it, take the cash and book the flight yourself, because you keep the difference and the routing.
That comparison needs a flight search open on the day you book, which is why this is a watch rather than a book. The saving is genuine. It is simply not additive, and the offer is written to make it feel additive.
